The newest wave of professional storytelling focuses on exploring personal stories and creating performance pieces from them. This requires an ability to find the universal power of the personal experience so that others can relate to the story and find their own place within it. While folktales have a "built-in" appeal-their survival over the centuries of oral retelling proves their ongoing appeal to general audiences-personal stories must he crafted specifically so that others can relate to them. It is, perhaps, one of the most difficult aspects of storytelling, and one that requires attention to the undercurrents and archetypal messages that reside in these stories of our personal lives.
