PhilPapers is an interactive online bibliographic index of current scholarly research for professional philosophers. The site was created in 2008 by David Bourget of the University of London and David Chalmers of the Australian National University. Bourget and Chalmers serve as general editors of the project with the assistance of an advisory board and a number of subject area editors who help categorize and maintain the indexed citations. All members of the advisory board and editors are affiliated with academic philosophy departments. The stated mission of PhilPapers is to facilitate the exchange and development of philosophical research by gathering links to philosophically-related books and articles available via the Internet and then provide tools for philosophers to organize, access, and discuss that content. In addition to actively searching the web for the latest philosophical research in journals, books, and on web pages, the project also allows professional philosophers to submit their own manuscripts for upload to the index. Sponsors of the site include the Institute of Philosophy of the School of Advanced Studies at the University of London, the Centre for Consciousness of the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University, and the Joint Information Systems Committee, which supports higher education and research in the UK by providing leadership in the use of information and communications technology. Searching the PhilPapers index is free. Many of the advanced features of the site, however, require a user account, as well as an affiliation with a university holding a current subscription to the indexed journal content in order to access the subscription-based articles.
The homepage is divided into two main areas: an information sidebar on the left and a content area on the right. The information sidebar provides links to the latest news about the project, an area for users to register and log on to the site, and an About section which provides links to the site's sponsors, the home pages of the site's creators, the profile pages of the subject area editors, contact information, and a page to learn more about the project.
