Abstract
Controversy also surrounds the herbicide used for fumigation, reportedly Roundup Ultra (Monsanto) or a similar glyphosate-surfactant combination. Although regulatory reviews have not attributed any toxicity to glyphosate or its main metabolite, the extent of the investigation has been questioned. And in November, 2000, a coalition of indigenous groups and international organisations highlighted the hundreds of complaints to the Colombian human-rights ombudsman that "aerial eradication has caused eye, respiratory, skin, and digestive ailments". The fact that glyphosate-surfactant is toxic in acute overdose, with a high mortality, has led some experts to question the toxicity of the surfactant.
