Abstract

The objective of this research was to understand the representations and determinants of the association of poverty and madness as social disease according to the theory of degeneration and eugenic ideology, extended to an area of social medicalization and administration of life, the first half of the twentieth century in Colombia. It is a socio-historical research and enroll in the currents of social and cultural history. It is a retrospective study of databases composed by books of inputs and outputs, medical records and reports of the trustees and medical psychiatric asylums in Cundinamarca and Antioquia, of which the prevalence of major diagnoses, treatments are shown and social variables that influenced them.
