THIS is another book on the democratization process in Hong Kong. What distinguishes this volume from many others appearing in recent years is the amount of careful research work done by the author over more than a decade. Lo has been studying the subject since his Ph.D. years and has proved himself to be an impressive commentator on Hong Kong politics, both through his academic publications and media commentary.
While it is difficult to achieve significant breakthroughs in a historical account of the democratization process of the territory, the author's interviews of and personal correspondence with forty-seven key actors in Hong Kong's political development in the crucial years of 1989 and 1990 make...
