Abstract.
This article brings forth evidences that the application of theory in practice is undoubtedly difficult and a constant effort is needed in order to understand the clients' problems and which are the most appropriate actions to safeguard the child and to promote the child's welfare. The article presents a case study based on the author's experience as a social worker in England and it reflects the main actions that had been taken in the light of legislation, guidelines and relevant theories. The article argues that a theory that is well accepted due to its effectiveness proved to be insufficient and did not help to understand the clients' problems and their behaviour. The eclectic approach helps the social worker to understand complex behaviour and it underpins the best practice in social work. Also the article demonstrates the importance of evidence based practice and the need to use in practice what proved to be effective being mindful at the methodological details and the research design.

De-a lungul timpului s-a demonstrat cä teoria §i practica in asistenta socialä se aflä într-o relatie de dependentä reciproca : practica este izvor de înîelepciune pentru teorie §i invers (Butt, Parton, 2005). O tendintä moderna în asistenta socialä, considerata a fi "[...] noua manträ in dezvoltarea serviciilor de protectie §i bunästare a copilului [...]" (Halvorsen, 2009, 65-81) este practica bazatä pe dovezi2. Teza cre§terii calitätii practicii in asistenta socialä prin folosirea teoriei §i a cercetärilor riguroase a fost validatä de-a lungul timpului de numero§i cercetätori (Taylor, White, 2001 ; Macdonald, 2001 ; Department of Health, 2000). Practica bazatä pe dovezi oglinde§te intelepciunea asistentului social de a foiosi in practica ceea ce §i-a dovedit eficacitatea §i de a nu urmäri propriile predilectii (Cigno, 1998). în acest context, întrebarea : "Cum stabilim ce teorie sau ce teorii sä folosim §i cum Ie folosim? " (Payne, 1998, 129) devine o întrebare cheie pentru orice practician în acest domeniu. Dar aplicarea teoriei in practica nu este nicidecum un procès facil (Payne, 1997) mai aies în condiîiile în care profesia de asistenta socialä "[...] presupune performarea unor sarcini neuniforme, într-un context imprevizibil [...]" (Manea, 2007, 92).
Care va fi argumentul acestui articol? Teoria cognitiv-comportamentalä este larg acceptatä...
