In 1958, Dr Mahal joined Diploma in Psychological Medicine (DPM) at the All India Institute of Mental Health (AIIMH), Bangalore and finished in 1960. In 1976, he came back to Delhi and served as Medical Superintendent at the Hospital for Mental Diseases (now IHBAS) for about a year and retired from the Government service in 1977 at the age of 58.
