A graduate of the universities of Münster in Westfalia and Sheffield in England, Hubertus Schulte Herbrüggen specialised in More studies, eventually establishing a research centre at the University of Düsseldorf and being appointed an advisor on the More Project at Yale University, which finally produced the Complete Works. He was also a founding member of the Amici Thomae Mori in 1962. He is now in retirement.
In this article he explores the issue of Thomas More's enduring appeal. Besides identifying a whole range of interests associated with More, Schulte Herbrüggen's focuses on the manner of More's death and he examines the nature of More's martyrdom in terms of a prophetic witness against tyranny. A witness that continues to possess resonance for all times and locations in which tyrannies are manifested.
Key words: Martyrdom, William Roper, saints, testimony.
