Born in Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu in January 1938, Tang Jiaxuan is currently 60 years of age. After graduating from the Japanese Language Department of Beijing University, Tang went to work in the Sino-Japanese Friendship Association where he held successive posts as section worker, section chief, deputy division director, and director. He was appointed second secretary of the PRC Embassy in Japan in September 1978, and was promoted to first secretary in October 1980. He was transferred to the post of deputy director of the Department of Asian Affairs under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in October 1985. In April 1988, he was promoted to minister- counsellor of the PRC Embassy in Japan. He was transferred to the concurrent posts of aid to the minister of foreign affairs and director of the Department of Asian Affairs in 1991, and promoted to vice-minister of foreign affairs (in charge of Asian affairs) in March of the following year. In September 1996 he assumed the concurrent post of MOFA Party group secretary. He was selected to the 15th CCP Central Committee in September of the next year, and was promoted to minister of foreign affairs this March.
