A project to improve the iron stores in nonpregnant women in Vietnam and reduce maternal morbidity and mortality has proven successful.
Reporting on the project at the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases annual scientific meeting last month, Beverley-Ann Biggs said poor nutrition was implicated in half of all child deaths worldwide - a proportion unmatched by any infectious diseases since the "Black Death".
