Cinematographer of 81 films in a career that spans nearly half a century, Raoul Coutard is perhaps most noted for his 14 films with Jean-Luc Godard, including Breathless (1959), Le Petite Soldad (1963), Contempt (1963), Un Femme Mariee (1964), Pierrot Le Fou (1965), Weekend (1967), Passion (1982), and Prenom Carmen (1983), and two films with Francois Truffaut, Shoot the Piano Player (1960) and Jules and Jim (1962). Among so many others, Coutard also shot Z (1968) for director Costa-Gavras.
Originally a photojournalist in Southeast Asia for "Life" and "Paris Match," then a documentarian before beginning on New Wave feature films, Coutard, now 86, is retired.
