Abstract

The Spanish art of the first three decades of the twentieth century has been established on the basis of the confluence of broad stylistic trends: realism, regionalism and vanguard. The artists of this period, with their works and artistic thoughts, gave life to a fluctuating and unorthodox art. Spanish identity and roots as well as new airs were confronted and shared, with a plastic language addressed on two fronts, towards tradition and towards the vanguard. On this vague and often contradictory stylistic basis, the social images of José Gutiérrez Solana offer a dark and pessimistic "black" look on the Madrid of those times, those visual documents and stories contributed to shape a reality opposed, and at the same time cross-linked, to the thrusts of modernity.
