Bazzana, Kevin. Wondrous Strange: The Life and Art of Glenn Gould. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2004. 528 pp. ISBN 0-19-517440-2 (hardback). $35.
Bazzana's previous volume on Gould, subtitled "the performer in the work," focused on the pianist's art. Here we have a richly documented biography of this fascinating Canadian, whose "Goldberg" Variations became one of the best selling recordings in the United States. Gould's relationship with Beethoven's music was somewhat lukewarm, but the performances are no less compelling. He recorded all of the concertos; several of the sonatas; the Bagatelles, Opuses 33 and 126; and the Variations, Opuses 34, 35, and WoO 80. His recording of the solo piano transcription of the Fifth Symphony met with mixed reviews. Includes numerous photographs, an extensive bibliography of sources, and index.
Buch, Esteban. Beethoven's Ninth: A Political History. Translated by Richard Miller. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2003. 327 pp. ISBN 0-226-07812-4. $17.
This is a paperback edition of the book listed in "Recent Beethoven and Beethoven-Related Publications 2001-2003" in the Beethoven Journal 18 (2003): 33.
