The editors of this volume dealing with the sensitive issue of forgiveness chose to include on its title page a quote from the Lord's Prayer as given in Matthew's Gospel: "And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors" (Mt 6:12 NRSV). The reviewer admits that these words have often aroused qualms of conscience as to whether she personally should be making this petition, particularly in the form given by Luke in his Gospel: "And forgive us our trespasses" (Luke 11:4). The words of the Publican in Luke's parable of the Pharisee and the Publican at prayer seem much more appropriate to the situation, namely: "O God, be merciful to me a sinner" (Lk 18:13).
A thoughtful person who shares these sentiments could scarcely find another book that addresses itself more pointedly to the wounded hearts of people of good will, recently ravaged by the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York...
