The guest speaker at the February meeting of the Asheville chapter was Akiyo Yatagai, a scientist from the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN) in Kyoto, Japan. In the United States to study the Drought Monitor, Yatagai explained the newly established research institute for approaching environmental issues.
The RIHN was founded in April 2001 (www.chikyu.ac.jp). The interuniversity research institute was established to carry out integrated research related to the global environment. Yatagai noted that the Japanese name means "research institute for integrated global environmental studies," but in English it is named for the interaction between humans and nature.
