Every year, George H. Buck makes a sentimental point of issuing or reissuing sessions featuring musicians who played on the first record date he produced in 1949, Tony Parenti and his New Orleanians . Thus this set has Jimmy Archey's name first because he was trombonist on that session, not because he led this band. Buck's choice is made out of fond allegiance, but Archey may be less known these days, so I hope that record buyers do not pass this set by as a result. This double CD celebrates a club that closed its doors in 1992 with live recordings documenting a fine band.
Many newly issued location recordings are hugely rare but lacking in inspiration or recorded fidelity, but this set is satisfying on all counts. It also provides much...
