This book is divided into ten well-chosen chapters covering prewar neutrality; the territorial losses of mid-1940; the Legionary State of 1940-41; the Ion Antonescu regime of 1941-43; Romanian-German relations, 1940-44; Romanian military activity on the Eastern Front, 1941-44; the fate of Romania's Jews; the August 1944 volte face; Romanian military activity against the Axis in 1944-45; and a conclusion. The style is mixed, ranging from scholarly dissertation to the author's personal anecdotes.
