The editors of the new series "C. H. Beck: Wissen" could not have selected a better scholar than Gerhard Schulz to provide a clear and comprehensive overview of the origins, facets, and continuing fascination of European Romanticism. In addition to his services as co-editor of the historical-critical edition of Novalis's writings, Gerhard Schulz also has distinguished himself by his magisterial twovolume investigation of Die deutsche Literatur zwischen Franzosischer Revolution und Restauration (1789-1830) (Munchen: Beck, 1983//1989). In this present volume one finds the same clarity of style, attention to historical and textual particulars, and ability to characterize succinctly and soundly that have been hallmarks of his writings over the past forty years.
