A darling of young conservatives, Ron Paul has a brand of libertarianism that has a solid streak of racism.
Congressman Ron Paul of Texas won more than one million votes in the GOP presidential primaries. Also, he surprised many political pundits with an uncanny ability to raise money online. While Barack Obama is popular on college campuses across the nation, Paul has his own army of young intellectual conservatives who have signed on to his libertarian crusade.
But this libertarian crusade has solid racist underpinnings. Paul has been a thorn in the side of the progress of African Americans for a long time. He was one of the few GOP House members who opposed the extension of the Voting Rights Act. In 1999 Paul was the only member of the House to vote against awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to Rosa Parks.
