SCONUL, 1994
SCONUL's working papers series is a good idea inherited from the now defunct Council of Polytechnic Librarians (COPOL). As Don Revill, the series editor, says in his introduction they are "papers produced in the normal course of the management of libraries [...] not published products inteded for the professional press and so should not be so judged". This makes them all the more useful for working librarians who are too busy to reinvent wheels and therefore welcome any opportunity to learn from the experiences of other colleagues working in similar areas of university library activity.
Since 1992 when the UK's higher education sector was radically restructured, university libraries have had to manage greatly increased students numbers without any accompanying increase in resources to support them.
