Abstract
The new millennium is going to be the millennium of knowledge. So demand for paper would go on increasing in times to come. In view of Paper Industry's strategic role for the society and also for the overall industrial growth, it is necessary that the Paper Industry performs well. Industries are backbone for Indian Economy. Like other industries, Paper Industries are one of major industries in Indian Economy. It plays a very vital role in Indian Economy. Before globalization, paper was the basic need for teaching and official working. After globalization, many alternatives of paper have been introduced in the market. As per W.T.O. agreement, many multinational companies are coming in Indian Market which has created sharp challenges and challenges before the domestic Paper Industries. Moreover, Paper Industries has a significant role and prospect in Indian Economy. The Indian Paper Industry is a booming industry and is expected to grow in the years to come. The usage of paper cannot be ignored and this awareness is bound to bring about changes and reforms in the Paper Industry for the better.

Introduction
Paper manufacturing and book printing mark the beginning of the knowledge revolution. In ancient India knowledge spread verbally through the word of mouth from the teacher to the disciple, hence it was called Shruti. But with the discovery of scripts, written records gradually replaced the verbal transmission of thought. In India, the available writing materials were generally of two types hard and soft. Stone, metal, shells and earthenware were the examples of hard material. Engraving, embossing, painting and scratching were used for writing. Soft materials were wooden board (pati), dust (dhuli), birch-bark (bhurja-patra), palm-leaves (tada-patra), leather (ajina), cotton cloths (karpasik pata).In India, the testimony of paper manufacturing is borne out by the antiquities of Indian manuscripts, Islamic literatures, visitors accounts and the British sources. British literature revealed the early establishment of different categories of paper mills in India from 16th to 19th century. With the rapid demand of writing materials the paper making centers were established in different parts of the country like in Sialkot (Punjab); Zafarabad in district Jaunpur (Oudh); Bihar Sharif in district Azimabad (Patna) and Arwal in district Gaya (Bihar); Murshidabad...
