In the early i93os the Soviets repressed and eradicated modernism, and so produced a general literary decline in the Ukraine. Not until the second half of the i95os, during Khrushchev's "de-Stalinization," did the new literary generation build on the gains of the 1920s. This group reached their literary peak in the early 1960s and became known as the shestydesiatnyky or "writers of the sixties." The movement lasted barely a decade but manifested a renewal of poetic forms and subjects. As early as 1963, the Soviet regime began to silence the group; this effort preceded the arrests of 196572.
