Abstract

With Martineau and White, I have shown that there are no sex differences in immunisation rates in a south Asian UK-based population, even although the preference for boys remains strong.3 This paper concluded: "our findings suggest that the sex differences in health care use in British South Asian children are absent or insignificant and provide hope that such differences on the Indian subcontinent are amenable to change." Every Indian can help by taking basic but important simple actions-eg, handing out sweets at the birth of a girl as you do with a son, and requesting them from your friends and family; raising girls and boys with equal care, resources, and respect; and refusing to give or accept dowries as a matter of principle and not just because it is against the law (in India).
