This book is largely based on a survey of 40 mid-sized German machinery and component manufacturing companies. Some were observed to have achieved performance at least twice as good as others, and the study was initiated to determine the underlying reasons and associated lessons for management of manufacturing companies. The project involved consultants from McKinsey and a team from the Technical University in Darmstadt, including a professor and a team of students.
