Abstract

The Question of Social Presence Garrison and Shale (1990) suggested that sustained, contiguous, two-way communication between student and instructor was the appropriate hallmark of distance education because this process allows learners to negotiate and structure personally meaningful knowledge much like the educational transactions that occur in traditional classrooms. [...]researchers assumed these discussion forums occurred within a social constructivist paradigm.
