Abstract

Introduction From an evolutionary point of view, beauty and an attractive body shape are two markers of physical and psychological health, along with the concept of “good genes” and a healthy immune system [1]. [...]beauty and an attractive body shape reflect the concept of a healthy physiology that is free of genetic disorders and infectious diseases. [...]participants also reported (a) increases in preoccupation with weight and body shape, (b) increases in practices such as purging behavior to control weight, and (c) greater indications of disordered eating behavior. [...]the first aim of the present study was to investigate the associations between symptoms of body dysmorphic disorders as a proxy for dissatisfaction with body shape and appearance and sociocultural attitudes towards appearance in a sample of young adults in Iran. [...]the second aim of the present study was to investigate the association between self-esteem on the one hand and symptoms of body dysmorphic disorders and sociocultural attitudes towards appearance on the other in a sample of young adult Iranians.
