Anal herpes masquerading as anal fissure may be referred to gastroenterology or surgical departments where the diagnosis may be delayed. Clinicians may therefore consider the condition too rare to warrant screening, which is a costly omission due to the widespread HIV-1 and herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections.
