This volume, one of a series of dictionaries of war, revolution, and civil unrest, deals with America's brief war with Spain in 1898. Besides an alphabetical list of entries, the volume includes an introductory overview of the causes, conduct, consequences, and historiography of the war; a detailed chronology of events; and an extensive bibliography. The individual entries are brief, rarely more than a page in length, and factual rather than interpretive. Focusing strictly on its main subject, the dictionary does not cover the Philippine-American War, although it contains entries on Emilio Aguinaldo and other important Filipino nationalist leaders.
