The Springer Handbooks series goes back at least to 2005. It deals with various, often highly specific, topics. This volume is of broader sweep than some of the others. Although people have used the seas and used boats from early in human history, the concept of ocean engineering is recent. Some serious accidents in the sixties lead to the realisation that there was a very poor understanding of the properties of oceans.
