This book is an update of the editors’ Practical Advances in Petroleum Processing. They remind us that they commented in that book on the changes to the industry since 1965 and go on to outline the changes since 2005. They particularly look at the economic and environmental contexts. The first part of the book is an introduction to petroleum technology. It covers uses, business and economics and other energy sources and offers an overview of the formation, extraction and processing of oil. The second chapter is on safety and the environment. This covers the history of these concerns. Major accidents and near misses are discussed.
