Helping students "crunch the numbers" as they complete a thesis study or other course project involving statistics can be a time-consuming endeavor for any adviser or instructor. Students often need assistance in organizing their data, running the statistical analyses, and creating summary displays such as graphs and charts. However, at our institution we have found that requiring students to purchase their own copy of a statistical analysis package (from the university bookstore) can go a long way toward helping them effectively organize and analyze their data. We use a relatively powerful package called the SPSS Graduate Pack, and we have been pleased with its use by our students. The SPSS Graduate Pack is a statistical analysis package derived from the SPSS Base System that is specially designed for use by students in colleges and universities.
