Writing at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Albans, in the tradition of his illustrious predecessors Roger Wendover and Matthew Paris, Thomas Walsingham was the last great English monastic chronicler. It is therefore particularly unfortunate that he was so poorly served by his Victorian editors, who scattered mangled fragments of his work across several different volumes of the Rolls Series.
