Susan Faludi, author of the transformative book, Backlash, has done it again. Backlash, you will recall, meticulously investigates the way the media constructs stories that became fact, that became trends in a veritable "tipping point" of anti-feminism. The book goes a long way in explaining why feminists seemed to be swimming against the tide even while the status of women improved.
Stiffed, The Betrayal of the American Man is another exhaustively researched book, but this time about men. She chooses the daunting task of convincing us that men are less in control of their destiny than we have supposed. The case for male "victimhood" (not her words) is a tough sell but Faludi's intellectual honesty drives her, and the reader, to delve deeper into the reality of gender in our culture.
