The campaign in the southern Soviet Union in the summer and fall of 1942 has attracted much historical scholarship. Even the best of these campaign histories, however, tend to be strangely silent on the activity and contributions of the German and Soviet air arms. One can hardly imagine a complete campaign history of the Normandy landings without a thorough recounting of the Allied aerial preparations, the operations of the USAAF and RAF air armadas, and the anemic Luftwaffe response. Yet, as Joel S. A. Hayward points out, "a recent thorough treatment [of the aftermath of the Stalingrad campaign] . . . fails to mention the Luftwaffe even once" (p. 330).
