An 88-year-old woman started receiving strontium ranelate [Protelos; dosage, route and therapeutic indication not stated] and, after an unspecified duration, presented with hair loss affecting her head, eyebrows, eyelashes and other body parts. After 2 months of treatment, her hair loss became more evident. Strontium ranelate was discontinued and she was diagnosed with alopecia areata universalis. She started receiving minoxidil and vitamin supplements. One month after strontium ranelate discontinuation, hair growth resumed on her eyelids and other locations.Author CommentAccording to the causality algorithm of the SEFV, the adverse drug reaction (ADR) described is probable: compatible temporal sequence, prior knowledge of the anecdotal ADR, improvement following removal of the drug, and no alternative causes found justifying the reaction.
