Abstract Through analyzing the concept, development history and works of gardening photography, unique status and charm of gardening photograph)- in the field of photography art was explored. It was proposed that professional knowledge about gardening disciplines should be grasped, and the shoot targets should be fully investigated to present excellent works of gardening photography. In addition, photographers should have strong artistic sense, and be able to grasp the means of expressing image language, so that they will produce works with outstanding themes, proper light, concise composition, harmonious hue color and shadow tone. Sophisticated equipment and post processing skills arc also needed.

Gardening photography in general refers to shooting horticulture-related flowers, plants, insects and even people. According to types of work classified in the long-established annual photography competition of Royak Horticulture Society (international garden photography competition, the first-class photography competition and works exhibition of plants, flowers and gardens, and also the treasure-house for photographers and experts co-hosted by Royal Horticulture Society and Royal Botanical Gardens), gardening photography is classified into the following six aspects: plant portrait, garden landscape, wild animal and garden, human and garden, edible plant garden, trees and four seasons.
1 Origin of gardening photography
Peter Henry Emerson, a British naturalistic photographer, elaborated the theory system of naturalistic photography in his work Naturalistic Photography for Students of the Art (1889). He considered photography as an independent art and a co-product of art and science, and proposed that photography art could be realized by directly recording natural materials in the natural environment on the basis of finding the view, composition, light and focusing. He used his lenses to record daily life of common people and also the natural world, and by using natural and plain photography techniques produced many idyllic works such as Towing the Reeds (1 885) and Shocking Corn (1888) . His photography theory and practices attracted numerous followers, they went to scenic areas and countryside of Britain, and presented numerous influential naturalistic photography works and most of them were gardening photography works.
