Enquiries initiated by Royal Caribbean - the operator of the pending "super" cruise ship, 'Ovation of the Seas' - have prompted Port Otago to commence preliminary evaluations as to potential works necessary to accommodate the 348-metre and 168,666GT vessel.
Ahead of the 5,000-passenger-capacity cruise ship's expected mid-2016 introduction to service, Port Otago chief pilot Hugh Marshall is leading a preparatory project which has included utilising a simulator at the Auckland Maritime School.
