RISTO URO (ed.), Symbols and Strata: Essays on the Sayings Gospel Q (Publications of the Finnish Exegetical Society 65; Helsinki: Finnish Exegetical Society; Gottingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, 1996). Pp. [viii] + iii + 238. N.P.
Symbols and Strata contains four essays on the Sayings Gospel Q: John S. Kloppenborg, "The Sayings Gospel Q: Literary and Stratigraphic Problems" (pp. 1-66), Risto Uro, "Apocalyptic Symbolism and Social Identity in Q" (pp. 67-118), Heikki Raisanen, "Exorcisms and the Kingdom: Is Q 11:20 a Saying of the Historical Jesus?" Schurmann's "aggregation model," (3) the stratigraphic model, and (4) the interpolation model. He then discusses tradition-historical approaches to Q (S. Schulz, W Schmithals) and redactional analyses (D. Luhrmann, W Schenk, A. Polag). He ends the survey with detailed summaries of five recent, mostly stratigraphic, analyses of Q (A. D. Jacobson, M. Sato, D. Zeller, J. S. Kloppenborg, J. Piper). From the Forschungsbericht he distills the method most appropriate for studying Q. The method...
