The second publication, Teaching for Musical Understanding (2001, paperback, $43.75) by Jackie Wiggins, is an overview of the practice of music teaching. Says Wiggins in her preface, "Your capacity to be an effective music teacher is directly related to the extent of your own understanding of music and of the ways in which people learn music." Wiggins believes that everything we know is directly related to our prior experience, and she encourages educators to use "musical problem-solving" techniques and to be well-organized in their approach to teaching. She offers practical ideas for the music classroom, ranging from the placement of furniture and instruments to ways to get students thinking musically. Also for sale from McGraw-Hill to accompany Teaching for Musical Understanding is a 16-track audio CD ($20.00) of music examples for listening, ranging from the Renaissance (such as a saltarello and a madrigal) to the twentieth century (contemporary Native American flute and a selection by the Canadian Brass). Readers may order any of these items from local bookstores or may contact McGraw-Hill (Direct Marketing Division, 860 Taylor Station Road, Blacklick, OH 43004; www.mcgraw-hill.com) at 800-262-4729.
