Before his death in April 1995, Anthony "Tony" Wise was a Hayward, WI, businessman and entrepreneur. He used his resources to create special events and public attractions that celebrated his own Scandinavian heritage and his friends' Ojibwe culture.
For many years, Hayward was known as the center of Northwoods history because of the Historyland he created. Historyland attracted thousands of visitors each year who wished to learn about the rich heritage of the lumbering era and to experience the culture of the Ojibwe people, according to Paul Mitchell, managing editor of the Sawyer County Record.
Wise employed many Native people at Historyland in various capacities, including cooks, maids, maintenance workers, Master of Ceremonies, and guides.
