Recently, the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Award to mark the 10th Anniversary of the Rosenthal Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicines was conferred on Darshan Shankar, Director of the Foundation for the Revitalisation of Health Traditions (FRLHT), based in Bangalore, India. A report from Radhakrishna Rao.
This award recognises "outstanding contribution to the revitalisation of traditional health care in India; towards the conservation of medicinal plants in India; and the development of extensive data bases on the material medica of Indian medicinal plants". The award panel has also commended FRLHT "for establishing a quality control and product development laboratory which is attempting to interpret traditional knowledge with the aid of modern tools and for initiating the development of a national herbarium of medicinal plants."
The well equipped FRLHT laboratory is active in testing and standardising herbal medicines as well as product development and database information. Further, it provides training and consultancy services in herbal medicines and traditional health care systems.
Recently, in collaboration with ETC Compass of Netherlands, FRLHT has developed a novel IT (Information Technology) tool comprising local health knowledge, home remedies, food and medicinal resources used by the community.
