Drugs and the American work force JACQUES NORMAND, RICHARD LEMPERT & CHARLES O'BRIEN (Eds) Washington, National Academy Press, 1995 336 pp., $39.95 ISBN 0 309 04885 0 In 1991, the National Institute of Drug Abuse sponsored a joint project by the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine to review the scientific knowledge on the prevalence and etiology of drug consumption by the US work-force, the impact of drug use on work performance and the effectiveness of work-site prevention and treatment programs. The 20member committee formed to address these questions was composed primarily of professors and scientists from a wide range of US universities and institutions.
Some of their more interesting findings were that drug use appears to be more a function of personal qualities of individuals rather than the work-force, that most alcohol and drug users do not develop patterns of clinically defined abuse,...
