Summary: The session will show the participants how they can apply the National Criteria for Performance Excellence (The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award) to their own organizations. A basic tool will be demonstrated which can be developed by the participants to conduct a basic self-evaluation as they evaluate using the National standard.

Introduction:
In this interactive session, we will evaluate the direct benefits for using the Baldrige based Performance Criteria in the health care industry. We will also evaluate the use of a Baldrige Based evaluation tool to improve the organization performance and we will determine the organizations' readiness to begin a journey to achieve the highest quality performance level in the Nation.

RESULTS FROM YOUR QUALITY PROCESS
While most Quality Performance Measures within Healthcare compare a provider to a set measure (i.e.: Number of Expected infections compared to actual), the Baldrige Criteria is based on performance improvement. The framework as shown in the attached slides has a Leadership driven focus that impacts the Management System to produce the highest levels of Customer Satisfaction and Quality Results. In 1999 the Baldrige Award was opened up to the Health Care Industry a significant number of Applications have been evaluated.
The areas of Quality Performance being evaluated include everything that the organization does. It begins by looking at how the Senior Executive team is personally involved in developing and maintaining the leadership system for delivering quality healthcare and performance excellence. It continues with an evaluation of how the organization focus on the patients and all other stakeholders is integrated into the administrative and healthcare staff leadership systems within the organization. The process continues section by section to evaluate the total organization including its relationships with its suppliers and the greater community.
The measurement system is both simple and complex for it asks the organization to define itself and to demonstrate that it does what it says it is doing. The Baldrige Examination process includes the completion of a limited (usually less than 50 pages) application that defines the organizations level of performance using a set of 20 basic, interrelated, results oriented requirements.
