David Schneider, MD, has been appointed director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) at the University of Vermont College of Medicine (UVM). Dr. Schneider serves as director of cardiology in the department of medicine and medical director of cardiology at Fletcher Allen Health Care. He succeeds Burton Sobel, MD, founding director of the CVRI, who passed away in spring 2013. Dr. Schneider has served at UVM/Fletcher Allen since 1994.
Dr. Schneider earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Notre Dame and his MD from the University of Cincinnati. He completed residency in internal medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, where he served as chief resident, and research and clinical fellowships in cardiology at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He is an active clinician, researcher and educator. His research has focused on exploring causal connections between diabetes and heart disease, and the role of platelets in the development and progression of atherosclerosis. His discoveries have helped to better determine bleeding risks after invasive procedures and reduce the incidence of dangerous clotting.
A highly regarded educator and mentor, Dr. Schneider has received four teaching awards for his work with fellows in the Cardiovascular Training Program. He has served as Councilor for the Society of Experimental Biology and has been a member of several panels and working groups for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and of the American Heart Association.
Vice President for Graduate Medical Education Appointed at Montefiore
Catherine C. Skae, MD, DSc, has been named vice president for Graduate Medical Education (GME) at Montefiore Medical Center and as associate dean for GME for Montefiore at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. Dr. Skae is an attending physician in the Department of Pediatrics at Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) and associate professor of clinical pediatrics, Department of Pediatrics at Einstein. Her tenure at Montefiore spans more than a decade, during which she has served as assistant chief of service, residency training director and vice chair for education in the Department of Pediatrics for CHAM.
