Abstract

The aim of this study is to estimate the economic value of recreational use that represents the Lake Chapala for economically active coastal villagers of Jalisco and Michoacan, Mexico. The estimate of the economic value generated by the wetland provides valuable management information that can be useful for both decision-making bodies of society and policies related to recreational use, protection and conservation of this natural resource. The research was conducted in the eleven towns adjacent to Lake Chapala. A semi-structured questionnaire was applied and worked on the basis of 1114 to be reliable intervals. Furthermore, the method of valuation travel cost was used to determine the total expenditure made during his visit. To analyze the data descriptive statistics and econometric model used OLS was applied to obtain the demand curve for the recreational site with SPSS software. The analysis results show that the potential value of recreational use that presents Lake Chapala in an average year is $1, 289,271.32 dollars. The study highlights the importance that should be given to Lake Chapala, the potential cash flow that this ecosystem can generate.
