Abstract

Activists and scientists are squabbling over the fate of the Bevatron, one of the most important particle accelerators ever built. The decommissioned particle smasher's remains occupy prime space on the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Scientists at the lab want to tear it down for fresh projects, but residents, fearing release of contaminants, want it to be made into a museum.
