Virtual Document eXchange (VDX) is a stand-alone product designed to manage all aspects of borrowing and lending. Via a profile, VDX can be set up for libraries that only borrow or only lend.
VDX provides customer-specific control over screen content both for the patron interface and for library staff administrative interfaces. Profiles for local libraries and for remote lenders allow detailed business rules to be established for interaction. VDX's system architecture allows the system to scale as required by using CORBA to spread both searching and local database updates over multiple processors or boxes containing the processors.
Archiving Records
Requests are stored until archived by the customer. Customers determine their own archiving policies. There is no limit on number of records stored in a year. Archiving is done via SQL scripts. Local staff initiate the scripts manually. Archived requests are searchable by staff with an appropriate permission level.
Creating and Accessing Records
VDX does not limit the number of borrowing or lending requests. It provides real-time status information for all requests tracked by VDX.
Customization
Other than extensive parameter choices, customization is limited to the staff and patron interface.
Blank request forms may be locally designed.
Interface With External Systems
Because it is ISO Protocol- and ING Profile-compliant, VDX can be used by libraries sending the majority of their ELL transactions on OCLC, RLIN, or DOCLINE. VDX interoperates with other systems in as much as they are IPIG Profile-compliant.
Fretwell-Downing (FD) is completing full interoperability testing with OCLC and RLG's ILL Manager. FD is working with the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to schedule interoperability testing with DOCLINE as soon as DOCLINE is ready to test the ISO ILL Protocol.
VDX is capable of communicating with integrated library systems via 239.50 for bibliographic and holdings discovery and via 3M's SIP2 for circulation integration. All SIP2 message pairs are supported as well as the CreateItem and DeleteItem extensions. The level of interface is determined by the local integrated library system. VDX has interoperated (either using 239.50 or SIP2) with Endeavor, Sirsi, Dynix Classic, DRA Multi-Lis, Geac Plus, Geac Advance, Amicus, Innovative Interfaces, DS, and Talis.
VDX is not aimed at libraries...
