Robert Bowie and Richard Immerman's collaboration has produced a history with very special qualities. Immerman has contributed over the past two decades as much as any historian to the revision of our understanding of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, John Foster Dulles, and American foreign policy during the 1950s. Bowie served as Director of the State Department's Policy Planning Staff from 1953 to 1957, and thus participated in the formulation of the Eisenhower administration's "New Look" national security policy.
