A retired navy officer, the author of awardwinning books on the naval history of World War II, and currently writer-in-residence at the University of North Carolina, Thomas B. Buell here makes his first foray into the military history of the Civil War. One might suppose that, entering a new arena, Buell would be tentative in his conclusions. Not so. Buell's book is full of forthright stands on the performances and worth of the Civil War's leading generals.
