Abstract

First of all, Wealhtheow's interpretative act is to be discussed as metalepsis, in terms of Gerard Genette's narrative theory, namely the author's or, in this case, the character's transgression of levels of fictionality (Genette 1972: 235). According to Bosworth and Toller's Old English dictionary, friðusibb glosses the Latin tutela pacis and tutela pacifica, while freoðuwebbe appears for pacis textrix (Bosworth and Toller 1882: 339, 336).1 Jane Chance describes the conventional idea on the concept of the peace-weaver: According to the forced agreement, not only is he to share with the Danes the Frisian throne, but is also obliged to bring it about that his own men and the Danes receive gold and treasure on equal terms. [...]far from being a manifestation of Wealhtheow's power, her final speech act exposes her disempowerment.
